GM Making OnStar Safety App Available To Any North American iPhone, Android User

General Motors

is making its OnStar Guardian phone app available to all customers in the U.S. and Canada with a compatible Apple or Android phone.

OnStar is a subscription-based service that allows drivers to contact from their vehicles emergency services such as roadside assistance and run navigation services.

Guardian was launched in June 2020. It enables users to access OnStar safety and security services on mobile devices and reach an OnStar advisor. Customers can share the features by adding as many as seven people to the MyFamily  list.

Other features include Mobile Crash Response that uses sensors in the phone to detect crashes and alert a certified OnStar advisor.

Later in June 2021 the app will add something called Location Status which saves and shares favorite locations on the app’s embedded map and can receive notifications for destination departures and arrivals of friends and family.

“We are excited to deliver the power and promise of OnStar’s key safety features to more people in more places,” said Santiago Chamorro, GM vice president of global connected services. “Over the past year, we’ve heard incredible stories that illustrate how OnStar Guardian has helped our members.”

OnStar has pledged to donate $1 to the Alzheimer’s Association for every download of OnStar Guardian, starting in June.
