Mortal Kombat 1 takes inspiration from PS2 era games, but with a fresh twist

Mortal Kombat 1 introduces a new aerial game mechanic that has not been seen in the franchise since Mortal Kombat Armageddon, nearly 20 years ago. Derek Kirtzic, lead systems designer at NetherRealm studios, expresses his excitement about this new feature saying, “this aerial kombat – that’s kombat with a K – was the thing I was most excited about seeing the players see and get their hands on.”

The developers have designed each character to offer an aerial game that gives players an edge by keeping their opponents off balance. Combat in mid-air is made possible with the introduction of an air-combo system and parry system, which provide players with a variety of new strategies.

Mortal Kombat 1 encourages players to focus on air-based combat rather than ground pounding, and the developers have done a great job making this possible by introducing Kameos – side characters that can come flying in and join a player’s current fighter in mid-air. The combinations that players can execute with these flying characters are relatively endless and are perfect for keeping opponents airbourne while the player recovers their ground game.

A Kombo Breaker feature has been introduced for Mortal Kombat 1, which can be activated by holding the block button and pressing towards an opponent. The system will use up some meter but will deliver a powerful offensives attack that resets the players back to neutral.

Mortal Kombat 1 is a balanced mix of previous Mortal Kombat games. Fans of this franchise’s most loved features will find some form of update in Mortal Kombat 1. While some of the franchise’s features from the past remain, many new features enhance the game, creating a fresh feeling, which offers players balanced gameplay.
