Album sales these days aren’t what they used to be, but Taylor Swift is one of the few names left in the music industry who can still convince hundreds of thousands of her most loyal followers to spend their money to actually own a copy of her latest release, whether that be in digital or physical form.
On MRC Data’s midyear report, Swift comes in at No. 1 on the list of the top 10 bestselling albums…but that important placement only tells a small part of the story when it comes to her ability to sell CDs.
In addition to scoring the bestselling album at 2021’s midway point, Swift also occupies two other spaces on the chart, meaning she is responsible for three of the tpp 10 bestselling titles so far this year. It’s not common for any one act to claim two of the bestselling releases in any given year, and a trio of massive sellers is nearly unheard of.
Leading the way is Swift’s Evermore, which has now sold 374,000 copies between digital and physical formats. Amazingly, it’s the only set to reach the 300,000 copies threshold. The title, which was released with only a few hours of warning in December, went right to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, just as its sister record Folklore did a few months prior (but more on that in a minute).
Part of the reason why Evermore has sold so well is due to its release date, as it arrived with less than a month to go before 2020 turned into 2021. The title also became a historic success when it was released on vinyl earlier this year, as it became the first LP to sell 100,000 copies in a single tracking frame in Billboard history.
Swift also appears at No. 3 with her most recent full-length Fearless (Taylor’s Version), the re-recorded take on her sophomore album Fearless. The singer-songwriter slightly altered all the songs on the years-old title and added a number of previously-unreleased songs, and her massive fan base rushed to pick up a copy, making it another No. 1 on the Billboard 200. That album has thus far sold 237,000 copies.
Down at No. 6 is the aforementioned Folklore, which has been performing well ever since it was released in mid-July of 2020. Despite the fact that it ended last year as one of the bestselling albums, it is also one of the most popular titles of 2021 when it comes to pure purchases. In this calendar year, the project that earned Swift her third Album of the Year Grammy has sold another 153,000 copies.
Halfway through 2021, no other artist (aside from Swift) has managed to claim two bestselling albums, at least when looking solely at the 10 most successful releases.
