Half of all the spaces inside the top 10 on this week’s Gaon Download chart, which ranks the bestselling individual songs in South Korea, are filled by debuting smashes, which all sold very well upon their arrival. Unsurprisingly, BTS start off at No. 1, as they have a new song that millions are focusing on, even if it’s not receiving the proper single treatment (though it certainly appears to be).
BTS’s “Permission to Dance” debuts as the bestselling song in South Korea…and it probably wasn’t very close. Gaon doesn’t publish weekly sales totals, but the single album the track is featured on was purchased by more than one million fans in the first day it was available, so it’s not difficult to believe that the tune itself was a digital favorite as well.
Coming in right behind “Permission to Dance” is Taeyeon’s new single “Weekend,” which debuts at No. 2. The former Girls’ Generation star has been succeeding on her own for years, and she is no stranger to appearing inside the top 10 on this sales-only tally.
Two tracks from semi-serious band MSG Wannabe come next, with both falling one space each, settling at Nos. 3 and 4. The group was created on the reality show Hangout With Yoo by the host, who regularly launches music projects for a period of time. This one has turned out to be especially successful, as the tracks “Foolish Love” and “Only You” have become not just bestsellers, but serious hits on the all-consumption ranking the Gaon Digital chart. The former title is steady at No. 1 on that roster for another go this week.
Lim Young-woong enjoys one of the biggest jumps in recent memory on the Gaon Download chart, as his single “Trust in Me” doesn’t just enter the top 10 this week, it breaks into the top 40. The cut vaults nearly 40 spaces at once to hit No. 5. Released in 2020, the tune is now a bestseller in the nation.
Baekhyun is back inside the top 10 this week with his single “Bambi,” which fronted his incredibly successful EP of the same name earlier this year. The Exo and SuperM singer is one of the most popular figures in the South Korean music industry, so it’s not surprising to see him inside the loftiest space on this ranking at almost any point.
BigMama’s “One Day More” is a non-mover on this week’s Gaon Download chart as it keeps at No. 7.
New at No. 8 is Kyuhyun’s “Together,” which so far is a standalone single, and it follows a long line of tunes he’s shared recently that aren’t connected to a specific bigger set, though many of them fit into a seasonal project he’s been working on. Kyuhyun is well-known as both a solo star and one of the members of Super Junior, as well as a number of sub-units of that act.
The last new entrant inside the top 10 on this week’s Gaon Download chart comes from rapper Loco, whose collaboration with actress and singer Lee Sung-kyung, “Love,” starts off as the ninth-bestselling song in South Korea this frame. The title is part of a project called Duet Mate, which sees several rappers pairing with actresses to create brand new songs.
Finishing the top 10 this week is “Rain Song” by Epik High and Colde, which descends one space from the previous frame.
