This Week’s 10 Biggest Songs In Korea

The top two songs in South Korea this week are by a new group that can be described as a parody, but apparently the tunes are still catchy enough to entice millions into streaming and buying them, bringing the pair of cuts to the top 10 for the first time on the most important songs ranking in South Korea.

The Gaon Digital chart ranks the most popular, most-consumed songs in South Korea every week using a methodology that combines sales, streaming and what is called BGM, which stands for background music (usually used in various forms of media).

MSG Wannabe—a group formed by Yoo Jae-suk, the host of Hangout With Yoo, an incredibly popular reality show—occupies the highest two rungs at once, a rare sight on the Gaon Digital chart. From time to time, Yoo creates vocal bands and releases music as part of the program, with MSG Wannabe, a parody of the band SG Wannabe (who recently appeared on the series), being just the latest. Under that moniker, two very short collections have been released, and now the latest has produced a pair of massive amshes.

MSG Wannabe’s “Foolish Love” rockets from No. 34, where it ranked last week, to No. 1, giving the act their first champion on the Gaon Digital chart. Right behind that win comes “Only You,” which gains even more ground, lifting from No. 41 to No. 2

The surging MSG Wannabe tracks force the next several tunes to step back, with Aespa’s “Next Level,” BTS’s “Butter” and Brave Girls’ “Chi Mat Ba Ram” retreating to Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively.

New to the top 10 (to the chart entirely, actually) at No. 6 is NCT Dream’s latest single “Hello Future.” The cut serves as the first promotional cut and title track to the band’s new collection Hello Future, which rules the Gaon Albums chart this frame. The track appears to be just the second top 10 smash for the NCT sub-unit.

The Final four titles present inside the top 10 on the Gaon Digital chart this week all fall from where they ranked last time around. Heize’s “Happen” descends to No. 7, OH MY GIRL’s “Dun Dun Dance” declines to No. 8, TWICE’s “Alcohol-Free” tumbles to No. 9 while Justin Bieber, Giveon and Daniel Caesar’s “Peaches” slips to No. 10.
