Twitter's head of safety and content moderation has left the company

Twitter has lost its head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, after she resigned from her role. Although Irwin has confirmed her resignation, she has not disclosed the reason for her departure. Irwin took on the role from Yoel Roth in November 2022 and, like Roth, was supportive of Twitter owner Elon Musk’s approach to content moderation. The Center for Countering Digital Hate recently reported that Twitter has been failing to properly and quickly address 99% of hate speech from Twitter Blue users. Irwin’s departure appears to have occurred just after Twitter cancelled a deal with conservative publication The Daily Wire, which then accused the site of labelling their content as “hateful conduct” due to “misgendering”. Musk later tweeted that the decision was a “mistake by many people at Twitter” and that the film was “definitely allowed”.
